Biography

Professor Gary Macpherson is a consultant forensic clinical psychologist. He accepts instruction from the Court, Crown Office, civil and criminal lawyers, Parole Board, Mental Health Tribunals, Social Work Services, Serious Fraud Office, and the Scottish and UK Government. He has given expert evidence to the Supreme Courts, Sheriff Courts and Court of Appeal, for over 25 years in the UK and in Europe via the International Co-operation Unit (ICU).

He has presented expert opinion to disciplinary panels for the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), and the British Psychological Society (BPS). He was honoured with a Fellowship for his “outstanding contribution to the advancement of psychological knowledge and practice” in recognition of over 25 years of psychological evidence to the courts.

Professor Gary Macpherson is Chair of the British Psychological Society (BPS) Expert Working Party on Access to Illegal Materials and a member of the Expert Witness Advisory Group. He has over 50 publications in forensic clinical psychology including books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles in psychology and legal journals.

He has contributed to various Government and British Psychological Society consultation documents and responses including the Guidance on Under-Age Sexual Activity: Meeting the Needs of Children and Young People and Identifying Child Protection Concerns. Scottish Government Consultation; The Admissibility of Expert Evidence in Criminal Proceedings in England and Wales (A New Approach to the Determination of Evidentiary Reliability) Response to the Law Commission Consultation; and was Chair of the response to the Law Commission: Unfitness to Plead: A consultation paper.
